What are reasons people fast? Is it just for them to lose weight or prove that you are more spiritual than others in your church? The reasons, or purposes for fasting are much more important than those superficial thoughts. Others have centered the motivation only on God, and not on our body. The consumer culture has always been lied to. My ultimate goal in the article is to create the awareness which is of great significance and ancient practice that is going to change your health and well-being. Let’s take a quick look at seven (7) important reasons to fast, and how good it is for the human body.
1. The body performs at its ultimate level
The human body functions at its best on an empty stomach. This way, all energies are kept maintaining bodily functions instead of processing food.
2. Detoxification
A build-up of toxins happens when we eat too much. Notice that when you fast, your body has a chance to heal and rejuvenate itself. Your skin will glow and many previous ailments will disappear.
3. Restoration of our natural state
Humans are designed to be able to go without food for a while. We can go without food for weeks. How did mankind survive before agricultural age? We had to survive without food for long periods of time before we could find another animal to kill and eat!
4. Connection to a higher power
Religions like Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, and many others all utilize fasting to some degree. There’s a reason why it’s such a prevalent religious practice around the world. It is due to its powerful purifying effect on the body and soul. For Christians, while Jesus faced the temptation of Satan, He fasted for 40 days. There is a principle of spiritual strength and connecting to the father that is demonstrated in fasting in the life of Christ (Luke 4:1-11). Mark 9:29 shows that the disciples needed a power from God that comes only through fasting.

5. Self-control
We live in an age where everything is so readily available. Often too available readily. Everyone has access to unlimited food whenever they want. This is a form of instant gratification which is toxic for society. If your ancestors had to go days between meals, you should at least have the capacity to go a few hours without food.
6. Breakfast is a lie
Why start your day out with a reward? You haven’t accomplished anything yet!
Often, many will notice that after forgoing breakfast, they receive godlike energy and focus that extends into the day. Who doesn’t want that?
7. Mind over matter
Most people don’t even have the self-control to go just a couple of hours without food. We reside in a consumer culture that does not have our health in mind. Your body is a primal machine; control it! Don’t let it control you. Developing what is built inside of you is very essential.
