A businessman who is accused of assaulting a woman named Esther Tuglo in Accra’s Zongo Lane has been granted bail by the city’s circuit court. Li Yong Gang is a 44 year old man who  was accused with assault, making a death threat, and causing damage. He pleaded not guilty to every accusation laid before him. The accused was granted bail in the amount of GHS 100,000.00 with one surety by the court, which was presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Essandoh. The accused was told by the court to leave his passport with the court’s registrar. The court granted the bond after learning that the accused has a fixed address, as requested by his attorney. The lawsuit will now be heard on August 3, 2022.

The complainants, Madam Esther Tuglo and Mr. Emmanuel Ansong, were workers in the accused’s shoe store on Zongo Lane, Accra, according to the prosecuting police inspector Eric Pobee. According to the prosecution, the accused looked at Close Circuit Television (CCTV) footage from the store on July 7, 2022, and discovered that another employee, Tulley, had stolen from his drawer while Madam Tuglo, who saw the act, sat down unconcerned.

On July 8, 2022, at around 9:20 a.m., while work was still being done at the shop, the accused, who was carrying a knife, allegedly accosted Madam Tuglo and demanded to know why she had stood by while her coworker Tulley was stealing money from the drawer.

The prosecution said the accused person held Madam Tuglo by the neck and threatened to kill her. Inspector Pobee said Mr Ansong intervened to prevent the accused person from stabbing Madam Tuglo where the accused person turned to Mr Ansong and cut him with the knife in the neck.

Mr Ansong sustained a deep cut on his neck and was rushed to Ussher Fort Hospital where he was admitted, treated, and discharged later, the prosecution said. The case was then forwarded to the Police which led to the arrest of the accused person.
