Ejura shooting: NDC demand dismissal of Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding the dismissal of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei Mensah.

The opposition party says he is complicit in the Ejura Violence that led to the death of the two protestors.

The report of the three-member ministerial committee that investigated the circumstances that led to the disturbances, shootings, injuries and death of some persons in Ejura in the Ashanti Region of Ghana on the 29th of June, 2021 was finally published in September.

At a press conference in Accra on the content of the committee’s report, the NDC says Simon Osei Mensah must be sanctioned for his role in the deployment of the military.

According to the opposition party, although it accepts that soldiers should have been called in to quell the justified and legitimate agitation of the Ejura youth as a last resort, the Ashanti Regional Minister irresponsibly together with the Commanding Officer of the 4th Infantry Battalion, Lt. colonel Kwasi Ware Peprah and the General Officer Commanding, Central Command, Kumasi, Brigadier General Joseph Aphour decided to use the military as a first resort.

It is on this grounds that the NDC is demanding that Simon Osei Mensah is sacked from his position as the Ashanti Regional Minister.

“We in the NDC hold the view, that the Ashanti Regional Minister, who without any due diligence or verifiable intelligence deployed soldiers to Ejura, ably supported by the 4th Infantry Battalion Commander and the General Officer Commanding, Central Command, Kumasi, must be dismissed from their positions for the poor judgement they exercised on the matter which led to the loss of precious lives and several injuries.

“The soldiers on the ground were only following their orders,” Sammy Gyamfi who addressed the NDC’s press conference today told journalists.

Making reference to no sanctions in the Ejura Committee’s report for the Ashanti Regional Minister, the NDC allege that it is grand collusion to cover up the heinous crimes of the actual masterminds of the unjustified Ejura killings.
