“Ghanaians don’t recognise the worth of sculpture”-Viral Sculptor

“Unfortunately the Creative Arts sector’s over concentration is on music and movie. An even in the Fine Arts branch painting is up and sculpture sidelined. Ghanaians don’t recognise the worth of sculpture,” sculptor, Yaw Kumi, in an exclusive interview with Learning Matters editor Osei Kuffour and the artist’s Kumasi-based studio.

The fine artist’s social media popularity has recently soared with just his clay stage of the well crafted sculpture of Ghana’s late former president, Jeremiah John Rawlings (fondly known as JJ Rawlings).

Sculptor Kumi is the brain behind great sculptures of late former Burkina Faso leader, Thomas Sankara, “racially” murdered African American, George Floyd, among others.
