LETTER TO CHIEFS, QUEEN MOTHERS IN OFFINSOMAN
Why do we enstool a chief? Why do we enstool a queen mother? To amass wealth from the resources meant for the collective (community’s) good, honour invitations to events and be sent off with fat envelopes and other goodies, submit protocol lists that sideline the vulnerable for admissions, others, be worshipped like demigods? NO! NO!! NO!!!
But what? Selflessly serving the people by leading the charge for social amenities (water, toilet, health facilities, police stations, schools, and the like) through the local authorities and the community-initiated interventions, ensuring equitable distribution of resources and opportunities, unconditionally accounting to the people, and holding duty bearers to account.
What do we see? I hesitate to ask! The people who hailed their ascension to the seats in anticipation for reliefs through the provision of decent basic social amenities or infrastructure have had their expectations dashed and become timorous souls for fear of persecutions.
But for how long shall we live under oppression in liberty? Just a handful of them are trying to make a mark, but in somewhat “half a loaf is better than no bread” fashion; a consolation. Thirsty in the abundance of water? (Rest in peace, legendary Robert Nester Marley).
Our chiefs, our queen mothers, ponder!
Let your light shine!
Together change is possible!
