NCCE SENSITISE YOUTH GROUPS IN JAMAN SOUTH MUNICIPALITY ON VIOLENT EXTREMISM

The rising rate of violence and radicalisation amongst the youth has raised a major concern in the world especially within African sub-region. This has necessitated the need for civic engagements with the youth to promote a sense of unity and being patriotic citizens of Ghana to prevent the activities of violence and radicalisation.

In a 2021 study conducted by the NCCE under the ‘Preventing Electoral Violence and Providing Security to the Northern Border Regions of Ghana’ (NORPREVSEC) project cited the youth as the most vulnerable to violent extremism. This worrying revelation led to NCCE implementing a campaign based on “Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism, PCVE” which funded and supported by European Union (EU) with the objective to prevent and contain violent extremism through promotion of social cohesion, peace and tolerance in the five (5) northern regions and other hotspots in Ghana.

Mr Emmanuel Oduro Municipal Director giving the welcome address.

As part of the fight against violent extremism in Ghana, Jaman South NCCE engaged some youth groups within the municipality at Ascension Presbyterian church, Japekrom on Friday 23rd June 2023 with the aim to ensure that the youth understand the negative consequences of joining violent extremists’ groups and be conscious of the legal framework that bars the activities of violent activities of violent extremist and terrorist groups.
Mr. Emmanuel Oduro, the NCCE Municipal Director of Jaman South while addressing the various youth groups present said the NCCE was undertaking this campaign dubbed Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism due to the occurrences of violent extremism and acts of terrorism in Ghana’s neighbouring countries which poses a security threat to the nation.

He made them to know that young individuals who are affected may not be aware of what is happening because radicalization is a gradual process. Thus, there is a dire need for civic engagements that foster a sense of unity, belonging, and patriotism in the youth to prevent violence and radicalization among them.
He urged the youth to be tolerant of the views of others, peace-loving, and have a sense of patriotism to ward off any attempts of being radicalized or influenced by extremists.

He then drew their attention on the objectives of the engagement which are to improve their knowledge and attitude on the culture of tolerance and non-violence to become Ambassadors for Peace and to tap into the energies of the youth and use it positively to promote peaceful coexistence and shun violent extremism in Ghana.
Chief Inspector Mark Kwabena Okyere who represented the District Police Commander at the Jaman South District Police headquarters speaking on Preventing Violent Extremism said the emergence of violent extremist activities is a matter of national concern and needed a major attention because if not handled properly could destabilize the peace and security of a nation. He thus called for a collaboration between security agencies and citizens to fight this issue.

He added that the citizens especially the youth needed to be vigilant and security conscious at all times and report any suspicious activities to the various security agencies to help maintain the peace and security of Ghana. Chief Inspector Okyere assured the various youth groups that the Police and other security agencies will continue to effectively carry out its duties to flush out these extremists whose activities are a danger to the peace and security of the country.
Rev Michael Ata Darkwah, the District Pastor of the Ascension Presbyterian Church-Japekrom urged the youth to be agents of peace in their various communities and admonished the youth not to allow themselves to be used to create divisions and conflicts within their communities. He added that peace and stability was essential to the economic development of a country hence the need to protect it at all cost.
