“The high cost of election campaign is one of the causes of public sector corruption”– former Attorney General,Domelevo
Former Auditor General, Daniel Domelevo is proposing a ceiling on the amount paid as filing fees by aspiring elected public officeholders.
He believes the high cost of election campaign is one of the causes of public sector corruption.
Speaking during the Domelevo Accountability Lectures organized by the Friedrich–Ebert Stiftung, he said the National Commission for Civic Education, (NCCE) can create a common campaign platform for politicians so they are not compelled to spend more money.
“The State can release money to NCCE and NCCE can create a common platform be it television, radio or rally grounds and our laws should put a ceiling on the amount that one must pay as a filling fee,” he said.
Daniel Domelovo says the cost of elections is the cost of Ghana’s corruption woes.
“It’s so much that they borrow money and then they use their own money finance this and they recoup it with interest. The State may have to provide some resources for this, but not give the money to the people themselves,” he added.
Investigative Journalist, Manasseh Awuni was the guest speaker for the Maiden Edition of Domelevo Accountability Lectures. He says collaboration can help anti-graft agencies deal with the menace of corruption.
It was the former Auditor General, Daniel Domelovo second major speech after he was forced to retire from the Audit service by the President.
